Need 2 Know: College Cheating Scam, FAA Stands by Boeing

  • College Cheating Scam: The Details: Federal prosecutors have charged 50 people in a nationwide college cheating scandal, dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues.” Celebrities, business executives, and wealthy parents were accused of bribing officials, faking athletic credentials and helping their kids cheat on college admission tests to get their children into elite schools. College coaches were also accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes to help students attend Yale, Stanford, USC, and other top universities. Read more here.

  • College Cheating Scam: The Players: Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were among those charged. Prosecutors say Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, paid $500,000 to get their daughters into USC by pretending they were crew athletes ー even though they don’t row. “Aunt Becky,” Loughlin’s character from "Full House," is trending on Twitter.   • Boeing Latest: Grounded: The United States and Canada are the only two nations still flying a number of the Boeing 737 Max 8 planes in the wake of the deadly Ethiopian Airlines crash. The European Union, 36 countries, and nearly 30 airlines are now suspending the planes from flying. The FAA says its review shows “no systematic performance issues and provides no basis to order grounding the aircraft.” Read more here.

  • Boeing Latest: Reaction: President Trump weighed in on Twitter, saying planes have gotten too complicated to fly. He also spoke by phone to Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, who “reiterated to the president our position that the Max aircraft is safe,” according to a spokesman. Read more here.

  • Brexit Vote: Lawmakers will vote today on whether to leave the EU without an exit deal at the end of the month, following another major defeat for British Prime Minister Theresa May. On Tuesday Parliament voted down May’s withdrawal plan for leaving the European Union ー for the second time. There is a second vote scheduled for Thursday, where lawmakers can choose to delay Brexit.   • Death Penalty: California Gov. Gavin Newsom will announce a moratorium today on the state’s death penalty. There are currently 737 death row inmates in the state. Newsom plans to say that capital punishment is immoral and “inconsistent with our bedrock values.” Read more here.

  • Pell Sentence: Australian Cardinal George Pell was sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing two choir boys. Pell is the most senior Catholic official to go to jail for abusing minors. Pell faced up to 50 years behind bars. Read more here.

  • Freebies: Chipotle: Chipotle is expanding its loyalty program nationwide, giving customers 10 points with each dollar spent. Customers get a free entree after 1,250 points. As part of the launch, Chipotle is partnering with Venmo and will put surprise amounts of up to $500 into fans’ accounts until Friday. Read more here.

  • OMG OBJ: The Giants agreed to trade their star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns for a pair of draft picks in a trade that shocked football fans. See the reaction here.

  • Britney on Broadway: A musical comedy headed to Broadway will feature Britney Spears’ songs. "Once Upon A One More Time" will include 23 of the singer’s hits. The show centers on popular Disney characters, including Cinderella and Prince Charming. Read more here.

  • A Whole New World: Disney released the first full trailer for "Aladdin." Will Smith plays the Genie, and can be heard rapping "Friend Like Me." Watch it here.

  • Most Aggressive Drivers: The city with the most aggressive drivers in the U.S. is Los Angeles, according to a new study by GasBuddy. Philadelphia comes in at number 2, and Sacramento at 3. See how your city ranks here.
